Army Withdrawal Plans from JK Put on Hold, Officials Say

Due to recent terrorist killings and the current situation, the proposal has been postponed indefinitely

The planned phased withdrawal of the Army from certain areas of the Jammu region in Jammu and Kashmir has been put on hold indefinitely due to cross-border terrorist attacks.

The government had intended to reduce the presence of the Rashtriya Rifles, an Army counter-insurgency force, and transfer security responsibilities to the Jammu and Kashmir Police and paramilitary forces.

The Jammu region houses three Counter-Insurgent Forces (CIF) – Delta Force, Romeo Force, and Uniform Force. The proposal was to gradually hand over security and law enforcement to local police and paramilitary units in the South of Pir Panjal.

However, due to recent terrorist killings and the current situation, the proposal has been postponed indefinitely.

The Jammu region has witnessed several militant-related killings, including Army personnel and civilians. The recent attacks have resulted in casualties, including soldiers and civilians.

In light of these incidents, the decision to withdraw the Army from the hinterland has been put on hold.

The final recommendation regarding the withdrawal was expected to be discussed at the Unified Headquarters (UHQ) led by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, which includes representatives from the Army, police, and paramilitary forces.
