Russia-Ukraine crisis Live: Russia destroys Ukraine airbases, air defences
Ukraine President said Russia carried out missile strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure and the country’s border guards, and that explosions had been heard in many cities.
Russia Ukraine Crisis Live: Russian defence ministry said that Ukraine’s air bases and military infrastructure has been neutralised, according to an IFX news agency report.
Meanwhile, the Ukraine military said that five Russian planes and a Russian helicopter were shot down in Luhansk region, reported Reuters.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation in Ukraine early Thursday. As Putin spoke, big explosions were heard in Kyiv, Kharkiv and other areas of Ukraine. Later, air sirens went off in Kyiv, indicating that the city is under attack. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy declared martial law in the country and said Russia had carried out missile strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure and the country’s border guards.
Putin’s move comes close on the heels of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s statement that Russia will invade Ukraine within hours. Russia had earlier said that separatists had asked Kremlin for help to repel Ukranian “aggression”, and as explosions rocked the breakaway eastern city of Donetsk.
For days now, the Russia-Ukraine borders have seen large deployments of Russian military columns. Tensions had climbed after Putin recognised two separatist regions in Ukraine as independent and ordered the deployment of what he called peacekeepers.
