Rangdum

Rangdum (3657m) the farthest and the most isolated part oif the Suru valley.

Rangdum is an elliptical expanded plateau surrounded by colorful hills on the one side and glacier encrusted rocky mountains on the other. Situated 130kms south-east of Kargil, Rangdum falls midway between Kargil and Padum.

Due to its remoteness from inhabited parts either of suru or Zanskar, the area wild beauty is almost haunting. While its isolated is near perfect even as the unpaved Zanska round traverses its length.

The chief attraction of Rangdum area as an imposing 18th century. Buddist monetary with about 40 monks in residence. Perched picturesquery a top a centrally rising hillock which is entranched around by the bifurcated course of a wild mountain stream.

The Rangdum monastery has the aura of an ancient fortification guarding a mustical mountain valley.

Rangdum , with its gompa and the attendant village of Juliodok,is the last inhabited region in the Suru valley.

Rangdum is also the destination of the nomadic herdspeople called Bakarwals, who trek up every year from the Himalayan foothills near Jammu, bringing their flocks of sheep and goats to grow fat on the rich summer growth of grass.
