Rohit Sharma: Would have batted first. Obviously some assistance to start with but under lights there will be good assistance for our pacers. Great honour, great moment to lead the team. It’s important for us to no get carried away by the performances we put in. Same team as the last game.

It is the same pitch as the ENG v SA match – 64m and 69m square boundaries, the straight boundary is at 76m. There is a bit of shine and it means that it’ll not slow down as the game progresses. The challenge for the bowlers is to hit a length around 6.5-7.1 metres, a hard length which has proved difficult to get away. Sri Lanka after a loss to Afghanistan will have their task cut-out. Form says India will win it easy. They are meeting at Wankhede. An encore and all is doing the emotional rounds but India are far more superior compared to Lanka than they were in 2011. Such is the gulf now between the neighbours as far as cricketing prowess is concerned. India have Iyer and Siraj to get some form. That would tick off every box for them. SL have a meek mathematical chance. They would want to hold on to that with a win here

When these two teams met first in 1979, Sri Lanka upstaged an upset and defeated the more fancied India. Cut to 1996, the Jayasuriya-Kaluwitharana storm was blowing away opponents and so they did against India as well in one of the league games. In the semis, they met again. India dismissed the duo without anything on the board but Aravinda De Silva showed his prowess. A burning Eden pretty much showed the angst of the public by the end of the game. India came out triumphs and the World Cup returned to India after 28 years. 2019 was the first team when it seemed that Lanka wasn’t a match anymore to this Indian outfit and India won it easy. 2023
