Jammu Boils at 42.7°C as heatwave intensifies in J&K

A relentless heatwave has gripped Jammu and Kashmir, with temperatures surging across the Union Territory and sparking concern among residents and authorities. Jammu city remained the hottest in the region, recording a maximum temperature of 42.7°C, as per the latest data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The scorching heat extended to other parts of the Jammu region as well. Katra, the base town for pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine, recorded 38.2°C, while hill stations like Batote (32.3°C), Banihal (32.5°C), and Bhadarwah (31.8°C) also experienced significantly high day temperatures for this time of year.

The oppressive conditions have raised concerns about potential heat-related health issues, especially among outdoor workers and vulnerable populations.

In the Kashmir Valley, temperatures continued to trend above normal. Srinagar recorded 31.9°C, while Qazigund saw 32.8°C, and Kupwara reached 30.9°C.

Even the relatively cooler areas such as Pahalgam and Gulmarg reported highs of 27.8°C and 22.2°C, respectively, underlining the broad impact of the heatwave.

With dry conditions prevailing and no immediate signs of rainfall, the IMD has urged people to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, stay hydrated, and take precautionary measures.

Schools, hospitals, and local authorities have been asked to remain on alert in view of the continued heat stress, especially in the plains of Jammu.

The ongoing heatwave marks a challenging phase for the region’s population, with many hoping for some relief through pre-monsoon showers in the coming days.
