Army officer assaults SpiceJet employees over excess baggage issue at Srinagar airport: Airline
An Army officer allegedly assaulted four SpiceJet employees at Srinagar airport’s boarding gate on Saturday, leaving two of them grievously injured, the airline has said in a statement.
The incident took place during the boarding process for flight SG-386 from Srinagar to Delhi.
According to the airline, the altercation began when the passenger, who was carrying cabin baggage weighing 16 kg—more than double the 7 kg limit—was asked to pay the applicable charges.
The passenger allegedly refused and forcibly entered the aerobridge without completing mandatory boarding checks. He was escorted back by a CISF official, whereupon he reportedly turned violent.
SpiceJet said that the officer “grievously assaulted” four of its staff members with punches, kicks, and even a queue stand. One employee collapsed and fell unconscious after repeated blows, but the assault allegedly continued. Another suffered heavy bleeding from the nose and mouth after being kicked in the jaw while attempting to assist the unconscious colleague.
“The victims were rushed to hospital and are undergoing treatment for what the airline described as “grievous injuries.”
An FIR has been registered with the local police, and SpiceJet has initiated the process to place the passenger on the civil aviation “no-fly” list. The airline has also written to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, seeking appropriate action.
Airport CCTV footage of the incident has been secured and submitted to authorities.
“SpiceJet strongly condemns any act of violence against its employees and will pursue this matter to its fullest legal and regulatory conclusion,” a spokesperson said.
Meanwhile PRO Defence Srinagar in a statement said that Indian Army is committed to uphold highest standards of discipline and conduct, and full cooperation is being extended to the authorities in investigating the case.
