Former Governor Satya Pal Malik Passes Away After Prolonged Illness

Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik passed away on Tuesday at the age of 79. He had been battling kidney-related ailments for a long time. He breathed his last around 1 PM on Tuesday at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi, where he had been undergoing treatment.

Satya Pal Malik served as the last Governor of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019. It was during his tenure that Article 370 was abrogated on August 5, 2019, ending the region’s special status and splitting the state into two Union Territories — Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Coincidentally, today marks the sixth anniversary of that historic decision.

After the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir, Malik was appointed the 18th Governor of Goa, and later served as the 21st Governor of Meghalaya until October 2022

जम्मू-कश्मीर के पूर्व राज्यपाल सत्यपाल मलिक का मंगलवार को लंबी बीमारी के बाद 79 वर्ष की आयु में निधन हो गया. उन्होंने मंगलवार दोपहर करीब 1 बजे नई दिल्ली के राम मनोहर लोहिया अस्पताल में अंतिम सांस ली, जहां उनका इलाज चल रहा था. वह लंबे समय से किडनी की बीमारी से जूझ रहे थे. हालत, ज्यादा बिगड़ने पर उन्हें 11 मई को दिल्ली के राम मनोहर लोहिया अस्पताल में भर्ती कराया गया था.

सत्यपाल मलिक अगस्त 2018 से अक्टूबर 2019 तक पूर्ववर्ती जम्मू-कश्मीर राज्य के अंतिम राज्यपाल रहे. उनके कार्यकाल के दौरान ही 5 अगस्त 2019 को अनुच्छेद 370 को निरस्त कर दिया गया था और जम्मू-कश्मीर का विशेष दर्जा खत्म करके उसे दो केंद्र शासित प्रदेशों- जम्मू-कश्मीर और लद्दाख में विभाजित किया गया था. संयोग की बात है कि आज ही इस फैसले की छठी वर्षगांठ है और इसी दिन सत्यपाल मलिक ने अंतिम सांस ली.

जम्मू-कश्मीर के दो केंद्र शासित प्रदेशों में विभाजित होने के बाद सत्यपाल मलिक को गोवा का 18वां राज्यपाल नियुक्त किया गया. उन्होंने अक्टूबर 2022 तक मेघालय के 21वें राज्यपाल के रूप में भी कार्य किया.
