The police have registered a case against Muthiyazhagan, the Karur district secretary of the Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam.

The bodies of 38 people who died due to stampede at the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s rally here on September 27, have been identified and currently efforts were on to hand over their mortal remains to their relatives, Dindigul district collector S Saravanan has said on Sunday.

The identify of a woman was yet to be established, he said. “Currently, the work to identify this woman was on and once it was done, we would follow the due procedure of conducting a post-mortem and hand over the body to her relatives,” he said. — PTI

Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Law and Order, S. Davidson Devasirvatham said, “We will have to get the preliminary investigation done. Thirty-nine people have lost their lives. A case has been registered.”

National Spokesperson of AIADMK, Kovai Sathyan says, “… Looks like this situation is very grave. However, the information we have recieved from the ground is that many more are hospitalised in private hospitals… The government machinery is struggling to keep up with the demands of handling this type of crisis… The true picture is still not clear as to what led to this fiasco. It looks like the blame game will start rather than addressing the needs at this moment…”

Former Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK leader V Senthil Balaji arrived at Government Medical College and Hospital, Karur. He said, “Till now, 31 people have died in the stampede and 58 people have been admitted. After the stampede incident, the CM immediately enquired and ordered the district collector, SP, and me to rush to the hospital, advising us to call extra doctors and provide proper treatment…Tomorrow, the Chief Minister is going to come here himself. As of now, 46 persons are in private hospital, and 12 persons are admitted in a government hospital for treatment.”

“In Karur, the news that approximately forty people, including children, lost their lives due to stampede at a gathering attended by Thaveka leader Mr. Vijay is deeply shocking and distressing. Many others have been injured and admitted to hospitals. I urge the Tamil Nadu government to ensure proper treatment for all those affected. “For a political party’s gathering, it is the responsibility of the police to accurately estimate the number of attendees, select an appropriate venue accordingly, and deploy an adequate number of police personnel to ensure the safety of the public attending the event. There are also reports that electricity was disrupted during Mr. Vijay’s gathering. The Tamil Nadu government and the police acting with such negligence is highly condemnable,” he wrote.

“The DMK government, which deploys the entire district police force to provide security for gatherings organized by DMK members, has made it a habit to fail in providing adequate security arrangements for events held by opposition parties,” he added.

“I strongly urge the DMK government to immediately provide appropriate compensation to the families of those who lost their lives, conduct a thorough investigation into whether this accident occurred due to inadequate security arrangements and the power disruption, and take strict action based on the findings,” he wrote.

TVK chief Vijay abruptly ended his speech at a heavily overcrowded rally in Karur after several people in the crowd fainted and were rushed to hospitals in ambulances. During the chaos, Vijay appealed, “Police please help,” as a child appeared to have gone missing. A stampede-like situation ensued, leaving at least 10 people, including children, feared dead. Chaotic scenes unfolded in hospitals across Karur as the injured were admitted, while police later resorted to a baton-charge to disperse the massive crowd.
