He-Man Of Bollywood Dharmendra Passes Away At 89; Laid To Rest In Private Family Cremation
Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, fondly known as the “He-Man of Bollywood,” has passed away at the age of 89. The iconic star, who had recently been recovering at home after a hospitalisation earlier this month, died on Monday morning at his residence in Juhu. He was later cremated at the Pawan Hans crematorium in the presence of close family members.
Dharmendra is survived by his wives, Prakash Kaur and actor Hema Malini, along with his six children, including actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, and Esha Deol
Dharmendra’s Health Issues
The octogenarian was discharged from Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on November 12 and was reported to be in stable condition, recovering at home. At the time, Dr. Rajiv Sharma told IANS that the legendary actor had returned home “fully satisfied” after receiving the necessary treatment.
Providing an update on his condition, Dr. Sharma had said, “Dharmendra ji has gone from the hospital with full satisfaction. His family has taken him home. Everything has been arranged for him.”
He added, “He is in a stable condition. I request the public not to spread false news but instead pray for his recovery so that he can celebrate his next birthday with pride.”
The actor had earlier been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on November 10, with sources close to IANS saying that he was critical and on life support. On October 31 as well, Dharmendra was kept under strict medical observation by top doctors at the same hospital.
He would have turned 90 on December 8.
Career & Upcoming Work
Dharmendra was last seen in the 2024 film Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. He was also set to appear in Ikkis, directed by Sriram Raghavan. The film, starring Agastya Nanda and Simar Bhatia, is a war drama based on the life of Arun Khetarpal, the youngest Param Vir Chakra recipient. The movie, which also features Jaideep Ahlawat and Sikandar Kher, is slated for a December release.
Widely regarded as one of the most handsome, talented, and commercially successful stars in Indian cinema, Dharmendra enjoyed a distinguished career spanning over six decades and worked in more than 300 films. He holds the record for featuring in the highest number of hit films in Hindi cinema and was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2012.
Dharmendra made his acting debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. He rose to prominence in the mid-1960s with films such as Ayee Milan Ki Bela, Phool Aur Patthar, and Aaye Din Bahar Ke.
From the late 1960s to the 1980s, he delivered several blockbusters and memorable performances in films like Ankhen, Shikar, Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke, Jeevan Mrityu, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Seeta Aur Geeta, Raja Jani, Jugnu, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Dost, Sholay, Pratiggya, Charas, Dharam Veer, Chacha Bhatija, Ghulami, Hukumat, Aag Hi Aag, Elaan-E-Jung, Tahalka, Anpadh, Bandini, Haqeeqat, Anupama, Mamta, Majhli Didi, Satyakam, Naya Zamana, Samadhi, Resham Ki Dori, Chupke Chupke, Dillagi, The Burning Train, Ghazab, Do Dishayen, and Hathyar.
In the late 1990s and beyond, he reinvented himself through acclaimed and commercially successful character roles in films such as Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Life in a… Metro, Apne, Johnny Gaddaar, Yamla Pagla Deewana, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya.
