Biting cold grips J&K, Ladakh sees extreme lows

Kashmir witnessed the season’s coldest night on Thursday with mercury touching -9.8 degree Celsius in Sonamarg, said MeT officials.

The J&K meteorological centre stated that ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir and the tourist resort of Pahalgam in South Kashmir also witnessed a very cold previous night.

“ The Gulmarg recorded -9.2 degree Celsius followed by -8.6 degree Celsius in Pahalgam,” said an official of MeT.

The summer capital Srinagar also experienced a cold night with temperature dropping to as low as -5.1 degree Celsius while the gateway into Kashmir at Qazigund recorded -5.4 degrees.

However the day temperatures on Thursday were several notches above normal. Srinagar recorded a maximum of 11.1 degree Celsius followed by Kupwara at 10.9 degree and Qazigund at 10.5 degree.

The MeT has predicted further drop in night temperature.

“Significant fall in minimum temperatures expected till 10 Jan & thereafter likely to rise by 1-2°C,” said MeT director, Mukhtar Ahmad.

He said that moderate fog over plains of Jammu division with dense fog at isolated places is likely to continue for next five days.

The weather will be generally dry but cloudy till January 15.

“On 16-17 January, the weather will be generally cloudy with light rain and snow at isolated places of Kashmir division,” Ahmad said.

A severe cold wave continued to grip Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on Friday, with several places in the Kashmir Valley and the cold desert region recording sub-zero minimum temperatures, officials said.

In Kashmir, Shopian was the coldest at minus 7.7 degrees Celsius, followed by Pahalgam at minus 7.6 degrees and Pulwama at minus 7.5 degrees.

Srinagar recorded a low of minus 6.0 degrees, while the temperature at Srinagar Airport dipped further to minus 7.4 degrees.

Anantnag recorded a minimum of minus 7.1 degrees, Sopore minus 6.8 degrees, and Zethan Rafiabad minus 7.2 degrees. Gulmarg, the famous ski resort, settled at minus 7.2 degrees Celsius.

 

In the Jammu region, temperatures remained relatively higher, though some hilly areas experienced freezing conditions.

Bhaderwah recorded a minimum of minus 3.4 degrees, Rajouri minus 1.7 degrees and Udhampur minus 1.0 degrees. Jammu city recorded 5.6 degrees, while Jammu Airport logged 6.7 degrees Celsius.

Ladakh continued to reel under extreme cold, with Drass recording minus 24.6 degrees Celsius, the lowest in the region.
Padum recorded minus 20.3 degrees, Nyoma minus 21.6 degrees and Hanle minus 16.2 degrees, officials said.

The cold conditions are expected to persist over the next few days
