Recruitment Push: Health Department Refers 2400 Posts to PSC, JKSSB
The Jammu and Kashmir Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the healthcare system by ensuring sufficient availability of doctors, specialists, nurses, and paramedical staff across the Union Territory.
Recognising that human resources are the backbone of effective and quality healthcare delivery, the Health and Medical Education Department has launched an extensive recruitment drive to overcome staff shortages in government health institutions.

Replying to a question raised by MLA G A Mir, Health Minister Sakina Itoo said that the government fully acknowledges the critical role played by doctors, specialists, nurses, and paramedical staff in providing efficient healthcare services.
She informed the House that the department has recently referred 480 Medical Officer posts to the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission for recruitment. Once the selection process is completed, the newly appointed doctors will be posted to far-flung and under-served areas, as well as health institutions facing acute staff shortages, in accordance with existing policy and requirements.
The Minister further stated that 292 non-gazetted paramedical vacancies from the Directorate of Family Welfare, Maternity and Child Health (MCH), and Immunisation have been referred to the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board for recruitment and have already been advertised by the JKSSB. In addition, 290 non-gazetted paramedical posts from the Directorate of Health Services, Jammu, have also been sent to the JKSSB for recruitment.
She added that 608 posts under the Directorate of Health Services, Jammu, are in the process of being referred to the JKSSB, following concurrence from the Finance Department.
Meanwhile, 802 non-gazetted posts, including MTS and Sanitation Worker vacancies under the Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir, are currently under examination in the department and will be referred to the JKSSB after obtaining financial approval.
The Health Minister also said that contractual recruitment of doctors and paramedical staff is already being carried out under the National Health Mission (NHM), which provides a policy-approved mechanism to address manpower shortages at the district and block levels, particularly in remote and under-served areas.

She clarified that recruitment at the constituency or district level outside the NHM framework is not feasible, as appointments to public posts must strictly follow prescribed recruitment rules and statutory procedures. Any parallel arrangement, she noted, could lead to administrative and legal complications.
The Minister concluded that while regular vacancies continue to be filled through constitutional recruiting agencies, immediate staffing gaps are being addressed through NHM contractual engagements to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services across the Union Territory.
