Russia, China veto UN resolution on reopening Strait of Hormuz
Russia and China vetoed a UN resolution urging coordinated defence to keep the Strait of Hormuz open amid rising tensions.
Russia and China vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution on Tuesday aimed at ensuring the Strait of Hormuz remains open, despite repeated efforts to weaken the text in hopes the two countries would abstain.

The draft resolution, prepared by Bahrain and backed by the United States, had already been diluted from the original version that would have allowed Gulf states to use force to protect the vital shipping lane.
The 15-member council vote was 11 in favour, with Russia and China opposing and Pakistan and Colombia abstaining.
Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani expressed regret over the rejection, noting that Gulf states had hoped for stronger international support to secure the strait, a corridor through which roughly one-fifth of global oil flows.

Bahrain’s initial proposal would have authorised countries to use “all necessary means”, the U.N. wording that could include military action — to ensure safe transit and deter attempts to close the strait.
The final text removed such authorization, instead urging countries using the waterway to coordinate defensive measures to maintain navigation.
