US President Donald Trump has warned Iran against using the Strait of Hormuz as leverage, saying Tehran “cannot blackmail” Washington amid renewed uncertainty over the key shipping route.
Speaking at a White House event, Trump said the US is in talks with Iran but criticised what he described as its “flip-flopping” on the status of the strait.
“They wanted to close up the strait again … and they can’t blackmail us,” he said, adding that more information on Iran would be released later in the day and that the US is “taking a tough stand.”
