“Is Telegram permanently banned?”: Users question why it remains unavailable after NEET exams; what to know about the June 22 restoration
Questions surrounding Telegram’s availability in India continue to dominate conversations on social media, with many users wondering whether the messaging platform has been permanently banned despite the conclusion of the NEET-UG re-examination.
Over the past few hours, X has seen a growing number of posts from users asking why Telegram remains inaccessible and whether the restrictions imposed on the platform have been extended beyond their originally announced timeline.
One user wrote, “telegram is still not working Is it banned permanently????” Another asked, “Why is Telegram still not working?” Similar posts questioning the platform’s status have appeared throughout the day, reflecting the confusion among users waiting for services to return.
The concerns come after the government directed internet service providers to restrict access to Telegram over concerns that examination-related content linked to the NEET-UG re-examination could be circulated through the platform. The restrictions were presented as a temporary measure and were accompanied by a separate order affecting Telegram’s message-editing feature.

Social media flooded with questions
A search for “Telegram not working” on X reveals dozens of users seeking clarity on the platform’s status.
Some users pointed to the completion of the NEET-related examination process as a reason why the restrictions should no longer be necessary. One user wrote, “Why is telegram not working its 22nd reneet paper is done,” while another posted, “NEET is done but Telegram is still not working. What’s going on?”
Others questioned the restoration timeline itself. “June 21 has already passed, but Telegram still hasn’t started working today. Why is it still not working?” one user wrote while tagging Telegram founder Pavel Durov, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
The growing volume of such posts highlights the uncertainty among users, many of whom expected Telegram access to return immediately after the temporary restrictions were lifted.
What does the June 22 Telegram restoration timeline mean?
According to the government’s earlier directive, Telegram services were scheduled to remain restricted until June 22. Separately, the platform’s message-editing feature was expected to remain disabled until June 30.
The wording of the order can become a source of confusion. In most cases, when restrictions are imposed “until June 22”, the date is included within the restriction period. This means Telegram may remain unavailable throughout June 22, with services expected to resume only after the restriction period officially ends.
Many users may have interpreted June 22 as the day Telegram would start working again, leading to a surge of questions on social media when the app remained inaccessible.

When will work in India?
Based on the government’s earlier directive, Telegram services were scheduled to remain restricted until June 22. As per the directives, Telegram should start working starting midnight or June 23. However, keep in mind tha the message editing feature will remain restricted till June 30. Which means, it is expected to start working again starting July 1 midnight.
