The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is spearheading an ambitious road infrastructure drive across Jammu and Kashmir, with several mega highway, tunnel and connectivity projects aimed at transforming travel, boosting tourism and strengthening economic growth in the Union Territory.

Recent reviews by the Centre indicate that road projects worth nearly ₹2 lakh crore are at various stages of execution in J&K and Ladakh.

Among the key projects is the four-laning of the Jammu–Udhampur–Srinagar National Highway corridor, which is nearing completion and is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Jammu and Srinagar.

The ongoing Srinagar and Jammu Ring Road projects are also set to ease congestion and improve urban mobility.

NHAI, along with NHIDCL and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), is accelerating work on strategic routes including the Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway, Jammu Ring Road, Chenani–Patnitop–Nashri corridor and several mountain road projects across the region. Authorities have directed district administrations to resolve pending land acquisition and clearance issues to ensure timely completion.

In a major boost to religious tourism, detailed project reports are being prepared for road upgrades worth ₹3,500 crore along the Amarnath Yatra route. The government is also planning multimodal connectivity projects around Katra to improve access for pilgrims visiting the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari recently described the ongoing infrastructure expansion as a game-changer for the region, highlighting that new highways and tunnels will provide all-weather connectivity, enhance road safety and open up remote areas for tourism and trade.
