SBI plans to hire 1,500 probationary officers to boost business growth

The State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest lender, plans to recruit 1,500 probationary officers (POs) this year to support its business growth. Of these, 1,446 are regular vacancies and 54 are backlog vacancies. The last date to apply is July 8, and the bank expects to complete the recruitment process by December, PTI reported.

According to the recruitment notification, applicants must be graduates in any discipline and should be at least 21 years of age as of April 1, 2026.

Apart from recruiting probationary officers, SBI also hires professionals through lateral recruitment from diverse backgrounds, including IT professionals and domain experts. These specialists are appointed as Specialist Officers across key functions such as data centres, information technology, risk management, legal, treasury, compliance and data analytics, depending on the evolving and multidisciplinary nature of banking.

The bank’s latest annual report said SBI recruited 67 sportspersons during the last financial year to promote Indian sports and build a team of disciplined, high-performing individuals.

Overall, SBI hired 4,640 officers, 19,340 associates and 1,653 contractual staff during 2025-26, according to the annual report.

The report also stated that SBI has consistently maintained an annual attrition rate of below 1 per cent, with attrition standing at about 0.97 per cent in 2025-26, among the lowest in the industry. It said this reflects strong employee commitment, stability and the effectiveness of the bank’s people-centric policies.

In 2025-26, SBI spent Rs 75.87 crore on hiring and recruited a total of 25,633 people, including retired officials. The average hiring cost per vacancy stood at Rs 29,597, compared with Rs 40,441 in FY25.

According to the report, women account for 28.54 per cent of SBI’s domestic workforce, with 24 per cent representation at managerial levels and 8.55 per cent in senior leadership positions.

With a workforce of more than 2.45 lakh employees, SBI remains one of the country’s largest recruiters in the banking sector and continues to focus on generating employment while building capabilities aligned with evolving business, technology and customer needs
