🇮🇳 1. India’s Forex Reserves Cross $700 Billion
India’s foreign exchange reserves rose to a four-month high of $707.002 billion as of 7 August 2026.
Weekly increase: $14.1 billion
Foreign Currency Assets: $574.625 billion
Gold Reserves: $108.738 billion
SDRs: $18.745 billion
Reserve Tranche Position: $4.894 billion
The increase was supported by strong foreign currency inflows and RBI measures aimed at strengthening the balance of payments.
💰 2. RBI to Close FCNR(B) Forex Swap Facility Early
The Reserve Bank of India announced that its discounted forex swap facility for banks raising FCNR(B) deposits will close on 31 August 2026, instead of the earlier deadline of 30 September.
The facility has attracted $52.3 billion through FCNR deposits between 8 June and 13 August 2026.
🏅 3. 1,057 Gallantry and Service Medals Announced
On the eve of Independence Day, the Government announced 1,057 Gallantry and Service Medals for personnel from police, fire services, Home Guard and Civil Defence, and correctional services.
A total of 301 Gallantry Medals were awarded, including:
272 to police personnel
29 to fire service personnel
51 to personnel deployed in Jammu & Kashmir
38 Gallantry Medals to J&K Police
Chhattisgarh Police received the highest number among state police forces with 141 Gallantry Medals.
🇮🇳 4. India to Celebrate 80th Independence Day
India will celebrate its 80th Independence Day on 15 August 2026.
This year’s celebrations will highlight:
150 years of Vande Mataram
Yuva Shakti
Viksit Bharat @2047
Around 5,000 special guests have been invited.
For the first time, Vande Mataram will be sung from the ramparts of the Red Fort as part of the Independence Day ceremony.
🥇 5. India Wins Commonwealth Fencing Championship
India won its maiden overall title at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships 2026 held in Lagos, Nigeria.
India finished with 35 medals:
🥇 Gold – 13
🥈 Silver – 8
🥉 Bronze – 14
India also won the prestigious Wilkinson Sword Trophy for its overall performance.
🚨 6. Wanted Drug Trafficker Extradited from UAE
The Narcotics Control Bureau brought wanted fugitive drug trafficker Virender Singh Basoya back to India from the United Arab Emirates.
Basoya was arrested in the UAE in June 2026 following an INTERPOL Red Notice issued at the request of the NCB. He was subsequently brought to India through cooperation between Indian and UAE authorities.
🏛️ 7. J&K Police Personnel Receive Gallantry Recognition
A total of 51 personnel deployed in Jammu & Kashmir were among those receiving Gallantry Medals in the 2026 Independence Day awards.
The Jammu & Kashmir Police received 38 Gallantry Medals, highlighting the contribution of its personnel in counter-terrorism and other challenging operations.
