The Department of Remote Sensing and GIS, University of Jammu has invited applications for the engagement of one Junior Research Fellow (JRF) under an ISRO-funded research project titled “Study of glacier dynamics and mass balance of benchmark glaciers of Ladakh Himalayas using NISAR data sets.”
Project Details
The project is being funded under the NISAR Utilization Programme of ISRO, Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad. The project has a duration of three years, starting from April 2026.
The project aims to study glacier dynamics and mass balance of benchmark glaciers in the Ladakh Himalayas using NISAR datasets, with applications in Earth Sciences and related fields.

The position is purely temporary and part-time. The initial appointment will be for one year, and further extension will depend on the candidate’s performance.
Educational Qualification
Candidates should possess:
A Post Graduate Degree in Basic Sciences, OR
A Graduate/Post Graduate Degree in a Professional Course.
The degree should have been obtained through a selection process involving qualifying examinations such as:
CSIR-UGC NET, including lectureship/Assistant Professorship and GATE; or
National-level examinations conducted by Central Government Departments, agencies and institutions such as DST, DBT, DAE, DOS, DRDO, MHRD, ICAR, ICMR, IIT, IISc, IISER, etc.
Preferred Academic Background
Preference will be given to candidates having a Master’s degree in:
Remote Sensing & GIS
Geomatics Engineering
Geoinformatics
Environmental Sciences
Applied Geology
Geology
Candidates who have studied Glacier Science at the postgraduate level will also be preferred.
Desirable Experience and Skills
Candidates with the following skills and experience will have an advantage:
Working experience in the Himalayan region
Good communication and writing skills
Good knowledge of computers
Knowledge of SAR Remote Sensing
Familiarity with statistical software
Academic/research exposure to glacier science
Salary / Fellowship
The selected JRF will receive:
₹37,000 per month + 20% HRA
The fellowship is initially offered for one year and may be extended based on performance.
Alternative Appointment as Project Associate-I
If a suitable JRF candidate is not found, a Project Associate-I candidate may be considered.
For Project Associate-I, the qualification mentioned in the notice includes a Post Graduate Degree in Natural Sciences, MVSc, or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technology or Medicine from a recognised university or equivalent.
The Project Associate-I position carries an emolument of:
₹31,000 per month + HRA
The upper age limit for this position is 35 years.
Age Relaxation
Age relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/EWS/Women and Physically Handicapped candidates will be applicable as per Government of India rules.
