🇮🇳 1. India Celebrates 80th Independence Day
India celebrated its 80th Independence Day on 15 August 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the Red Fort. The celebrations focused on India’s development, indigenous technology and self-reliance.
🎖️ 2. Army Dog Tyson Honoured
Tyson, an Indian Army dog, was honoured on Independence Day for his bravery during an operation in Jammu & Kashmir. He was recognised with a Mention-in-Despatches for his role in an operation against suspected terrorists.
🛡️ 3. Modern Civil Defence Volunteer Force
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced plans for a massive and modern Civil Defence volunteer force during his Independence Day address. The initiative is aimed at strengthening India’s preparedness for emergencies and disasters.
⛽ 4. Petrol Export Levy Reduced to Zero
The Government of India reduced the export levy on petrol to nil from 15 August 2026. Duties on diesel and Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) were retained.
🌏 5. 7.7-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Indonesia
A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Flores Island, Indonesia, on 15 August. A tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake, and casualties were reported as rescue operations continued.

India began the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on 15 August 2026. Indian captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first.
7. Japan’s PM Skips Yasukuni Shrine Visit
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi did not visit the controversial Yasukuni Shrine on the 81st anniversary of Japan’s World War II surrender, amid the importance of diplomatic relations with China and South Korea.
