No New H1N1 Strain Detected, ICMR Says; Urges Public Not to Panic

*Circulating Influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 viruses belong to existing D.3.1.1 subclade; vaccines remain well matched, surveillance continues*

Srinagar, Aug 23 : The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has clarified that no new strain of Influenza A (H1N1) has been identified in the country, saying the viruses currently circulating are part of the existing H1N1 pdm09 lineage and there is no cause for panic.

According to senior ICMR scientists, as per news agency, the Influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 viruses currently circulating in India are similar to the A/Missouri/11/2025 (H1N1) pdm09-like virus strain. The viruses belong to clade 6B.1A.5a2a, subclade D.3.1.1, which has been in circulation since 2025.

The ICMR said the currently circulating Influenza strains are well matched with the vaccine strains recommended for the Northern Hemisphere, providing reassurance regarding the ongoing seasonal influenza activity.

Seasonal influenza, including H1N1, is generally self-limiting, with common symptoms including fever, cough, headache and body ache. Most people recover with appropriate care, adequate rest and symptomatic management.

However, young children, elderly persons and individuals with underlying medical conditions may face a higher risk of complications and should remain particularly cautious.

The ICMR has advised people experiencing persistent, worsening or severe symptoms to seek timely medical consultation.

The situation is being closely monitored through regular surveillance, with necessary public health measures being undertaken, the ICMR said. (JKNS)
