Trump welcomes PM Modi’s efforts against opium as US names India among major drug-producing countries

The US clarified that inclusion does not reflect a government’s efforts against drugs, saying countries were listed due to geographic, commercial and economic factors.

US President Donald Trump has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government for their efforts to tackle illicit opium poppy cultivation, while urging China to take stronger action against chemicals used to produce synthetic drugs.

In a Presidential Determination submitted to Congress on September 15, Trump said, “I welcome Prime Minister Modi and the Government of India’s efforts to address illicit opium poppy cultivation and bolster supply chain integrity.”

“I look forward to continued cooperation through the United States-India Drug Policy Framework,” he added.

The remarks came after India was included among 23 countries designated by the US as major drug transit or major illicit drug-producing countries. The list also includes China, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Peru, The Bahamas, Belize, Burma, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Laos, Nicaragua and Panama.
