Centre Proposes Comprehensive Review Of TET Framework

Education Ministry proposes review of TET eligibility, serving teachers’ qualification issues; seeks consultations with States, UTs, NCTE and other stakeholders

New Delhi, Sep 17 : The Ministry of Education, Government of India, has proposed a comprehensive review of the existing arrangements relating to the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), in view of representations from teachers, teacher associations, educational institutions and other stakeholders.

In an Office Memorandum/Press Release dated September 16, 2026, a copy of which lies with news agency JKNS stated that, the Ministry said it has also taken note of the directions and observations of the Hon’ble Supreme Court concerning the requirement of TET for teachers covered under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.

The proposed review is aimed at ensuring a transparent, fair and workable framework for teacher eligibility.

The Ministry has proposed examination of the existing TET eligibility and qualification framework, including issues concerning teachers who are already in service and are required to acquire TET qualification.

It has also proposed measures to ensure that TET examinations are conducted periodically and at reasonable intervals.

The review will examine practical difficulties faced by serving teachers in obtaining TET qualification and consider measures to address such issues.

The Ministry has proposed consultations with State Governments, Union Territory Administrations, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), educational experts and other stakeholders.

It will also examine whether appropriate amendments to relevant statutory provisions are necessary in the larger public interest.

The Ministry said the proposed measures are being considered in view of representations received from various stakeholders and emerging issues concerning teachers and teacher eligibility. (JKNS)
