Jammu-Srinagar Highway Traffic Advisory 4th Oct 2026,NH-44, SSG Road, & Travel Guidelines
The Traffic Police Headquarters, J&K, Jammu/Srinagar, has issued a detailed traffic advisory for October 4, 2026, covering the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri Road (SSG Road), and Mughal Road.
The advisory has been issued in view of ongoing road construction, single-lane stretches, shooting stones, landslide risks and other factors that may affect the smooth movement of traffic.
Slow Traffic Movement Reported on NH-44
According to the Traffic Police Headquarters, very slow traffic movement was observed on NH-44 from October 2, 2026, at 1600 hours to October 3, 2026, at 1800 hours.
The slow movement was attributed to several factors, including:
Single-lane traffic and unloading of construction material at Dewal, Udhampur.
Single-lane stretches between Maroog and Kishtwari Pather.
Breakdown of vehicles between Ramban and Banihal.

Movement of heavy vehicles, particularly on stretches affected by ongoing road work.

Traffic Police has advised commuters to follow lane discipline and avoid overtaking, particularly on congested and single-lane stretches.
Traffic at Dewal, Udhampur, on NH-44 is being managed in a regulated manner because of a single-lane stretch of approximately 30–40 metres.
Passengers Advised to Prefer Daytime Travel
LMV and passenger vehicle operators have been advised to preferably undertake journeys on the Jammu-Srinagar NHW during daytime.
Night travel should be avoided due to the possibility of:
Shooting stones and landslides.
Movement of nomadic groups.
Ongoing construction work between Ramban and Banihal.
These conditions may cause inconvenience and delays to commuters.
Restrictions on Tanker Movement on NH-44
In view of widening work being carried out by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on the Digdol-Khooni Nallah axis of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, the movement of Kashmir-bound LPG and gas tankers will remain restricted during daytime.
The restriction will remain in place between 0700 hours and 1800 hours, as movement of tankers carrying inflammable material is restricted through tunnels.
As per the advisory, up tankers will be allowed beyond Chenani only after 1700 hours up to 0600 hours.
Tanker operators have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid inconvenience and ensure safe movement.
Advisory for Goods Carrier Operators
Goods carrier and LMV operators carrying fresh perishable stock have been advised to load their vehicles in accordance with advisories issued by the Traffic Police Headquarters from time to time.
The advisory comes amid the possibility of shooting stones, landslides and ongoing construction work between Ramban and Banihal, which may lead to delays and inconvenience.
Vehicle Owners Advised to Avoid Overloading
Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) operators and owners have been requested to refrain from overloading their vehicles.
Vehicle owners have also been advised to:
Ensure that their vehicles are in proper condition.
Double-check the brakes before starting the journey.
Carry sufficient fuel before undertaking travel on the Jammu-Srinagar NHW.
Commuters have also been advised to avoid unnecessary halts between Ramban and Banihal, particularly near areas vulnerable to shooting stones.
Traffic Plan and Advisory for October 4, 2026 Jammu-Srinagar NHW (NH-44)
Subject to fair weather and good road conditions, LMVs, passenger vehicles and private cars/HMVs carrying goods will be allowed to ply from both sides of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
Vehicles will be permitted to move from Jammu towards Srinagar and vice versa.
Commuters have been advised to follow lane discipline, as improper lane changing may result in congestion.
The Traffic Control Unit (TCU) Jammu-Srinagar will coordinate with TCU Ramban regarding the road conditions and traffic movement. The concerned traffic control units will also inform commuters about any applicable cut-off timings.
Army and Security Forces Convoy Movement
Subject to fair weather and good road conditions, Security Forces vehicles will be allowed to move from both sides on the Jammu-Srinagar NH-44.
The convoys will move from Jammu towards Srinagar and vice versa after confirming the status of the highway from the Traffic Control Unit at Ramban.
Kashmir-Sinthan-Anantnag NH-244
As per the orders issued by the SDM Chenani and SDM Kishtwar, subject to fair weather and good road conditions, LMVs, private cars and other permitted vehicles will be allowed to ply from both sides on the Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag road.
Vehicles will be allowed to move:
From P.P. Parna towards Anantnag between 0800 hours and 1600 hours.
From Daksum towards Kishtwar between 0800 hours and 1600 hours.
No vehicle will be allowed to proceed after the prescribed cut-off timings.
The Traffic Control Units at Jammu, Ramban and Srinagar will inform concerned commuters about the cut-off timings.
SSG Road Traffic Advisory
The advisory also covers the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) Road.
Subject to fair weather and good road conditions, LMVs will be permitted to ply from both sides on the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road, including:
Srinagar towards Kargil.
Kargil towards Srinagar.
Vehicles moving from Sonamarg towards Kargil and Minamarg towards Srinagar will be allowed only after receiving the green signal from the road maintenance agency up to 1200 hours.
However, HMVs will be permitted to move from Sonamarg towards Kargil between 1200 and 1700 hours.
No vehicle will be allowed after 1700 hours.
Motorists have been advised to carry sufficient fuel and avoid unnecessary halts, as the steep and challenging road conditions can affect traffic movement.
The TCU Srinagar and PCR Kargil will inform concerned commuters regarding the cut-off timings.
Security forces convoys moving on the SSG Road have also been advised to plan their movement in such a manner that civilian traffic is not disturbed.
Mughal Road Traffic Advisory
The Traffic Police has also issued an advisory for Mughal Road (NH-701A).
Subject to fair weather and good road conditions, and after receiving clearance from the road maintenance agency, LMVs followed by HMVs up to 10 tyres only will be allowed to ply on the Mughal Road from both sides.
Vehicles will be allowed to travel:
From Poonch towards Shopian.
From Shopian towards Poonch.
From Chandimarh towards Shopian.
From Heerapur towards Poonch.
Traffic movement will be allowed between 0700 hours and 1800 hours.
No vehicle will be allowed to proceed after the prescribed cut-off timings.
The Traffic Control Units at Jammu and Srinagar will inform commuters about the applicable cut-off timings.
Traffic Advisory for Commuters
The Traffic Police Headquarters has urged commuters to undertake journeys only after confirming the latest road status from the concerned Traffic Control Units.
Travellers are particularly advised to exercise caution on NH-44 because of:
Ongoing road construction and widening work.
Single-lane stretches.
Shooting stone-prone areas.
Possible landslides.
Slow-moving traffic and congestion.
Movement of heavy vehicles and security force convoys.
Motorists should maintain lane discipline, avoid unnecessary overtaking and halts, carry adequate fuel and ensure that their vehicles are mechanically fit before beginning their journey.
