Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police Advisory

The Traffic Police Headquarters, Jammu and Srinagar, has issued a traffic advisory for commuters travelling on major roads and highways across Jammu and Kashmir on 10 October 2026. Travellers have been advised to check the latest road conditions, follow traffic regulations and plan their journeys according to the prescribed timings.

According to the advisory, traffic movement on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) is expected to remain slow at certain stretches due to single-lane traffic, road-widening work, construction activities and the possibility of shooting stones and landslides.

Commuters have been urged to maintain lane discipline, avoid overtaking and confirm road clearance with the Traffic Police before starting their journeys.

1. Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) Traffic Update

Very slow traffic movement was reported on NH-44 between Marog and Kishtwari Pather due to the movement of heavy vehicles and the restricted passage of vehicles through narrow stretches.

Traffic was also being regulated at Dawal in Udhampur because of single-lane movement, with an estimated delay of around 30–40 minutes.

Important Guidelines for NH-44 Commuters

Passenger Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and private car operators are advised to prefer daytime travel.

Night travel should be avoided because of the risk of shooting stones, landslides, falling debris and other road hazards.

Commuters should remain alert in areas affected by ongoing construction and road-widening work.

Heavy vehicles and goods carriers should follow the instructions issued by traffic authorities.

Drivers must maintain safe distances, avoid unnecessary overtaking and follow lane discipline.

The advisory warns that traffic may slow down further in vulnerable stretches, particularly between Marog and Kishtwari Pather.

2. Restrictions on Tanker Movement on NH-44

Due to road-widening work by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at the Diwal Khuni Nallah axis on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, restrictions have been imposed on the movement of Kashmir-bound oil and gas tankers.

According to the advisory, Kashmir-bound oil and gas tankers carrying inflammable material will remain restricted on the affected stretch between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM.

The movement of such tankers will be permitted only after 5:00 PM and up to 5:00 AM, subject to the applicable traffic regulations and clearance.

Tanker operators have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid inconvenience and ensure safety.

3. Advisory for Goods Carriers and Heavy Vehicles

Goods carriers transporting fresh and perishable goods have been advised to load their vehicles in accordance with the directions issued by the Traffic Police.

Operators should also account for possible delays caused by shooting-stone-prone stretches and ongoing construction work between Ramban and Banihal.

Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) and Load Carrier (LCV) operators have been requested to avoid overloading and ensure that their vehicles carry sufficient fuel before undertaking journeys on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

Vehicle owners should check the fitness of their vehicles and carry adequate fuel to avoid breakdowns and unnecessary congestion on the highway.

4. Avoid Unnecessary Halt Between Ramban and Banihal

Commuters have been advised to avoid unnecessary stoppages between Ramban and Banihal, particularly near landslide-prone and shooting-stone-prone areas.

Unnecessary halts can create traffic congestion and expose travellers to additional risks in vulnerable stretches. Drivers should follow instructions issued by traffic personnel and avoid stopping at unsafe locations.

5. General Instructions for Commuters

The Traffic Police have advised people to undertake journeys only after confirming the road status with the concerned Traffic Control Units.

Travellers should keep the following precautions in mind:

Check the latest traffic advisory before departure.

Avoid night travel on vulnerable stretches of NH-44 where shooting stones and landslides are possible.

Do not travel against traffic directions or overtake in restricted zones.

Maintain sufficient fuel and ensure that the vehicle is mechanically fit.

Avoid unnecessary stops on narrow roads and in landslide-prone areas.

Follow the instructions issued by traffic police personnel and road maintenance agencies.

Do not proceed beyond the notified cut-off timings.

In case of adverse weather, wait for official clearance before travelling.
