During the period from October 17, 2026, at 6:00 PM to October 18, 2026, at 6:00 PM, very slow traffic movement was observed on NH-44 due to single-lane traffic, road construction and other operational restrictions.

The main reasons for slow movement included:

Single-lane traffic at Udhampur and other vulnerable stretches.

Breakdown of 64 vehicles between Marog and Ramban.

Movement of nomadic herds crossing the Banihal–Qazigund section.

Ongoing construction work between Ramban and Banihal.

Traffic restrictions and narrow road stretches between Marog and Kishtwari Pather.

Traffic was also regulated at Dhalwas in Udhampur district on NH-44 due to a single-lane stretch of approximately 30–40 metres.

Advisory for Passenger Vehicles and LMVs

Passenger Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs), including private cars, have been advised to plan their journeys carefully while travelling on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway.

During daytime travel, commuters may encounter delays due to shooting stones, landslides, movement of nomadic herds and ongoing road construction.

Drivers should follow lane discipline, avoid overtaking and cooperate with traffic personnel to prevent congestion.

Advisory for Tankers and Vehicles Carrying Inflammable Material

Due to widening work being undertaken by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) near the Digdol–Khooni Nallah area on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway, movement of Kashmir-bound oil tankers and other vehicles carrying inflammable material remains subject to restrictions.

Such vehicles are restricted from passing through the affected tunnels during the specified daytime hours, between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM. The advisory states that movement may be permitted after 5:00 PM, subject to the applicable restrictions and traffic instructions.

Tankers and other concerned vehicle operators should confirm the latest instructions from the traffic authorities before travelling.

Advisory for Goods Carriers

Goods carriers transporting fresh, perishable and live-stock consignments have been advised to load their vehicles according to the time restrictions and instructions issued by Traffic Police Headquarters.

This is particularly important because shooting stones and construction work between Ramban and Banihal may cause delays.

Instructions for Heavy Motor Vehicle Operators

Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) owners and operators have been advised to:

Avoid overloading their vehicles.

Ensure that their vehicles are mechanically fit before starting the journey.

Carry sufficient fuel for the entire journey.

Avoid unnecessary halts between Ramban and Banihal, particularly near shooting-stone-prone areas.

Follow the instructions of traffic authorities and road maintenance agencies.

3. Jammu–Srinagar National Highway Traffic Plan for October 19, 2026

Subject to fair weather and good road conditions, Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs), passenger vehicles, private cars and Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) carrying goods may be allowed to travel on NH-44 from Jammu towards Srinagar and vice versa.

However, the movement will remain subject to the actual road conditions and traffic regulations in force.

Commuters are advised to follow lane discipline and avoid unnecessary overtaking, as such practices may lead to congestion.

The Traffic Control Units (TCUs) at Jammu and Srinagar will coordinate with the TCU Ramban regarding road conditions and traffic movement.

Army and Security Forces Convoy Movement

Subject to fair weather and satisfactory road conditions, security forces’ vehicles may be allowed to move in both directions on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway.

The movement of such convoys will be coordinated after confirmation of the highway status from the Traffic Control Unit Ramban.

Commuters should follow the directions of traffic personnel and remain prepared for temporary delays during convoy movement.

4. Kishtwar–Sinthan–Anantnag Road (NH-244)

According to the advisory, traffic movement on NH-244 will depend on fair weather and good road conditions, along with the applicable orders issued by the concerned authorities.

Permitted Traffic Movement

LMVs and passenger vehicles may be allowed to travel from Kishtwar towards Srinagar and vice versa via the Kishtwar–Sinthan–Anantnag route.

Vehicles travelling from Paddar towards Padder/Anantnag, as specified in the applicable traffic instructions, must follow the designated timings and route restrictions.

The Traffic Control Units at Jammu, Ramban and Srinagar will inform concerned commuters about the cut-off timings and any changes in traffic movement.

Important: Travellers should confirm the precise route-specific timings with the traffic authorities before departure, as the original notice contains multiple restrictions for different stretches.

5. Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumri Road (SSG Road)

Traffic movement on the Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumri Road will be subject to fair weather and good road conditions, along with clearance from the road maintenance agency.

Traffic Schedule

LMVs will be allowed to travel from both directions on the Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumri Road, subject to the notified traffic arrangements.

Vehicles travelling from Sonamarg towards Kargil and from Kargil towards Sonamarg may be allowed up to 1:00 PM, after receiving clearance from the road maintenance authorities.

Heavy Motor Vehicles will be permitted to move from Minamarg towards Srinagar between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM, and from Sonamarg towards Minamarg between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM, subject to the applicable conditions.

No vehicle will be allowed to proceed after the prescribed cut-off time.

Motorists travelling on the route have been advised to carry and use anti-skid chains to improve tyre grip on slippery road surfaces.

The Traffic Control Unit Srinagar and Police Control Room Kargil will inform commuters about the cut-off timings and traffic status.

Security forces’ convoys on the SSG Road should be planned in such a way that civilian traffic is not unnecessarily disrupted.

6. Mughal Road (NH-701A)

Traffic movement on Mughal Road will remain subject to fair weather, good road conditions and clearance from the concerned road maintenance agency.

Traffic Instructions

LMVs followed by HMVs, up to ten tyres only, may be allowed to ply on Mughal Road from both sides, subject to the applicable restrictions.

Vehicles may travel from Poonch towards Shopian and from Heerpora (Shopian) towards Poonch between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM.

No vehicle will be allowed to proceed after the prescribed cut-off time.

Movement will be permitted only after clearance from the concerned road maintenance authorities.

The Traffic Control Units at Jammu and Srinagar will inform commuters about the applicable cut-off timings.

Drivers should avoid starting their journey late in the day, as reaching the route after the permitted hours may result in delays or restrictions.
