Kashmir valley was lashed by heavy rains today with weatherman forecasting freak weather to continue for next 36 hours due to Western Disturbances over Kashmir.
The rains led to waterlogging in many city areas including City Centre Regal Chowk and low lying areas in the outskirts of Srinagar.
Director Meteorological department, Sonam Lotus told Excelsior that Western Disturbances over Kashmir led to rains today. He said that rains may continue during the night and there will be intermittent showers tomorrow. He, however, said that weather will be dry from Tuesday.
The rains started across Kashmir in the morning and continued till evening. The rains exposed faulty drainage system in summer capital as several city markets and low lying residential colonies have been waterlogged.
The city markets including Sarai Bala, Hari Singh High Street, Magarmal Bagh and Batamaloo, have been waterlogged and as a result the shopkeepers are facing extreme difficulties.
The streets, lanes and bylanes of low lying residential colonies including in HMT, Rawalpora, Raj Bagh, Bemina, Batamaloo, Lasjan, Kursoo, Barzulla and other uptown areas have been waterlogged and inhabitants of these places said that no arrangement has been made by Srinagar Municipal Corporation for dewatering.
The Residency Road in City Centre was submerged in water due to faulty drainage system in the area. However, Fire and Emergency Services and Srinagar Municipal Corporation pumps were dewatering the City Centre but not attention was paid towards dewatering the other city areas.
Srinagar Sunday Flea market that is full of shoppers was almost deserted today as heavy rains lashed Kashmir and parts of it were flooded with rain water.
