Around 31 people have been killed when an ex-police officer opened an attack on a preschool child daycare center in Thailand police says.

The suspect is on the loose following the incident at Nong Bua Lamphu, in the northeast region of the country.

Police say that adults and children are among those who have been killed.

The attacker shot and stabbed children and adults and is now on the run, police said. A motive for the attack is unclear.

Reports from Thailand claim that the officer was dismissed recently.

Police say that he was last driving a white four-door Toyota pickup truck that had Bangkok identification plates.

A top police officer from Nong Bua Lamphu province said 23 children were among those killed, AFP news agency reports.

Shootings that kill a large number of people in Thailand are very rare. In 2020 a soldier killed 21 people and injured dozens more in the city of Nakhon Ratchasima.
