Mallikarjun Kharge elected new Congress President
The first non-Gandhi head in more than 24 years. This is the first time in more than two decades that Congress will get a non-Gandhi president.
Mallikarjun Kharge was elected on Wednesday to be President of the newly elected Congress President following his win of 7,897 votes. His opponent Shashi Tharoor got just 1,072 votes.
While the count of votes has been completed the official results have yet to be released.
In total, 416 of the votes were deemed ineligible.
Khargeβs followers broke out into dance and exploded fireworks outside the AICC headquarters in the city.
He could assume the presidency next week, the day after the festival of Diwali (October 23).
For the first time in more than two decades that Congress will get an elected President who is not Gandhi.
