50 injured after 6.1 magnitude earthquake hits Turkey

A magnitude-6.1 earthquake hit northwest Turkey in the early hours of Wednesday and injured fifty people

The tremor was small and centered around 170 kilometers (105 miles) east of Istanbul the country’s biggest city. It was felt strongly.

The National Authorities said the quake was of magnitude of 5.9 which was lower than the 6.1 reported by the US Geological Survey — and its epicenter was within Duzce provincial’s Golyaka district, even though it also affected other cities nearby.

“We were woken up with a big noise and tremor,” Duzce resident Fatma Colak said to AFP.

“We got out of our homes in panic and now we are waiting outside.”

Interior Minister Suleyman Sojilu, who was in Golyaka and Golyaka, told reporters that one person was seriously injured after jumping off an unguarded balcony in fear.

Initial photos showed people encased in blankets, outside their homes in the early morning hours. There were people who were seen placing blankets on the ground and lighting fires for warmth.

Schools will be closed on Wednesday, in Duzce as well as Sakarya provinces.

Soylu stated that, aside of a few barns that had been destroyed There were no reports of major destruction or collapses of buildings However, the inspections were still ongoing.

He also said that authorities would be checking the buildings of 8,000 for damages.

Agency for disaster relief in the country AFAD declared that there were blackouts that were controlled throughout the Duzce region, and urged residents not to be alarmed.

The report also stated that 101 aftershocks were recorded.

Turkey is located in one of the most active earthquake regions.

Duzce was among the areas struck by the 7.4-magnitude magnitude earthquake that struck in the year 1999one of the largest to strike Turkey over the past few decades.

The quake killed more than 17,000 people. This includes around 1,000 people in Istanbul.

Experts have been warning for years that an earthquake of this magnitude could destroy Istanbul and has led to the construction of large structures without security precautions.

A magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck Elazig in January of 2020 and killed more than 40 victims.

In the month of October, a magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck the Aegean Sea with 114 dead and injuring over 1,000
