Highly contagious, Tomato flu spreads to four states; government issues an advisory

The Centre has issued an advisory to states an advisory regarding Hand Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) which is often referred by the name of Tomato Flu.

As of now Four states namely Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Haryana and Odisha have been reported cases of Tomato Flu.

A report from Livemint, there were more than 100 cases of flu reported across the country among children who are under 9 years old. It is believed that the Tomato Flu was first reported in the Kollam district in Kerala on the 6th of May. It then spread to different areas within the state namely Anchal, Aryankavu, and Neduvathur.

In the advisory issued by the Centre that was released Tuesday morning, “The disease, which seems to be a variant of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD), occurs mainly in children under 10 years of age, but it can occur in adults too.”

The report stated that children need to be taught about the symptoms and signs and the side adverse effects of Tomato flu.

Tomato Flu Symptoms:

It was pointed out that even though Tomato Flu has symptoms that are similar to other viral illnesses like fatigue, fever and body aches as well as itchy skin but it is not directly connected to SARS-CoV-2, monkeypox, dengue or chikungunya.

“It is believed that the illness is a clinical form of the hand-foot-mouth disorder (HFMD) which is a common occurrence for children in schools. Children and infants are also at risk of this condition due to using nappies and contact with dirty surfaces and placing things directly in mouths,” the center noted in its report.

Tomato Flu Prevention:

Parents should instruct their children to not touch or hug other children with fever or skin rash symptoms, according to the report.

“You must help your children to end their habit of using their fingers or thumbs to suck. Help your child make use of a handkerchief in the event the nose is running or coughing.”

The advice stated that blisters shouldn’t be scratched or rubbed.

“Always utilize warm water for cleansing the skin, or to bathe the child. Consume a nutritious, balanced diet to boost your immunity. It is vital to have enough sleep and rest to boost healing.” it stated.
