J&K Govt issues weather advisory, asks people to avoid avalanche-prone areas

Divi­sional commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmad Khan Monday issued a weather advisory follow­ing a communication from the Indian meteorological centre, ministry of earth sciences. According to the advisory, a spell of light to moderate rain or snow will occur on mountains—most likely from late Monday

night to the forenoon of October 10—across Jammu and Kashmir.

“Light to moderate rain and snow on higher reaches at fairly widespread to widespread places of Kashmir, fairly widespread places of Jammu and at few places of Ladakh, mainly Kargil district during next 24 to 36 hours. There are chances of light to moderate snowfall on Zojila, Sinthan pass, Jammu-Srinagar Highway, Mughal Road and other hilly areas,” a statement issued by the office of divisional commissioner, read.

Accordingly, it said, deputy commissioners of Kash­mir division including Leh and Kargil have been asked to advise people not to venture in avalanche-prone areas during this period.

‘The concerned deputy commission­ers are also asked to take all precautionary measures to avert any untoward incident. The road clearance and power restoration should be the utmost priority,” the statement read.

“No Srinagar bound vehicle will be allowed from Jammu on Srinagar-Jammu highway on Tuesday. Not even cars. Traffic will ply from Srinagar to Jammu. Mughal Road is through Srinagar bound cars from Jammu can ply on that road,”
