Union Budget 2026 Live Updates: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has made history today as she’s presenting her ninth consecutive Union Budget, becoming the first finance minister in India to achieve this milestone. With this, she moves closer to the overall record of 10 budgets held by former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, though Desai’s were not consecutive. She also surpasses P Chidambaram and Pranab Mukherjee to become the second-highest budget presenter in Indian history, with all nine budgets delivered consecutively since 2019 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
For the first time in independent India, the Union Budget is being presented on a Sunday. While government offices and markets are usually closed, the BSE and NSE are holding special trading sessions to allow immediate market reaction.
This year’s budget is expected to focus on the smooth transition to the New Income Tax Act, 2025, set to replace the 1961 Act from April 1, 2026. Key allocations are anticipated for infrastructure, railways including Kavach 4.0 safety systems, defense, and artificial intelligence. Middle-class taxpayers are looking for relief under the new tax regime, including a higher standard deduction and possible expansion of the 87A rebate. The presentation comes amid global uncertainties, including U.S. tariffs affecting Indian exports, making the budget crucial for both domestic and foreign stakeholders.
