Light rain and snowfall are likely at isolated locations from February 1 to 2, while a high avalanche risk has been issued for areas above 2,000 metres in Bandipora, Ganderbal, and Kupwara over the next 24 hours, officials said.

The Meteorological Department stated that weather conditions are expected to remain largely dry until the end of January. As per the forecast accessed by the news agency, light rain and snowfall may occur at a few places on January 28, followed by generally dry weather from January 29 to 31, with cloudy conditions likely to develop by the evening of January 31.

According to the advisory, February 1 and 2 are expected to witness generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain or snowfall at scattered to fairly widespread locations. From February 3 to 6, the weather is likely to remain partly cloudy across Jammu and Kashmir.’

In view of the forecast, authorities have issued multiple advisories. Travelers and transport operators have been advised to check the latest road and highway conditions from concerned traffic authorities and strictly adhere to official guidelines.

Farmers have been asked to suspend agricultural activities, while the general public has been cautioned against visiting higher reaches that are snowbound or prone to avalanches.

The Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory Disaster Management Authority (JKUTDMA) has issued a high-level avalanche warning for regions above 2,000 metres in Bandipora, Ganderbal, and Kupwara for the next 24 hours. Residents and tourists have been urged to stay away from vulnerable areas and strictly follow safety advisories. In case of any emergency, people have been advised to dial 112.

The Meteorological Department further warned that the prevailing weather conditions may disrupt transportation and daily activities, especially in higher-altitude areas, and appealed to the public to exercise caution.

Avalanche Reported in Sonamarg

Meanwhile, Ganderbal Police reported that an avalanche occurred late last night at around 10:15 pm near the New Truck Yard in Sonamarg. The police said the impact was minimal, and no loss of life or damage to property was reported.

A police team, along with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), promptly reached the site to assess the situation. Authorities stated that concerned agencies are closely monitoring the area, and precautionary measures have been put in place to ensure public safety.

Ganderbal Police have advised residents, tourists, and transporters to strictly avoid traveling to or halting in avalanche-prone areas, particularly along the Sonamarg axis and adjoining regions, as the risk of avalanches remains extremely high.

“Unnecessary movement in vulnerable zones can pose serious risks,” the police said, urging the public to follow official advisories, cooperate with local authorities, and prioritize safety.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to public safety and appealed to everyone to remain alert and act responsibly.
