Fresh rains, snowfall in Kashmir

Parts of Kashmir received fresh rains and snow during the last 24 hours with Pahalgam receiving nearly 3 inches of snowfall, officials here said Tuesday.

The Meteorological Department officials said that there was an increase in night temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir amid the cloud cover.

Srinagar received 2.6 mm of rain overnight till 8:30 am and recorded a minimum temperature of 1 degree Celsius, which is 0.5 degree Celsius below normal for this time of the year.

Qazigund received 0.4 mm of rain and recorded a minimum temperature of 1.2 degrees Celsius, which is 0.8 degrees Celsius above normal

Pahalgam resort in south Kashmir received 7.4 cm of snow and recorded a low of minus 1.3 degrees Celsius, which is 2.2 degrees Celsius above normal.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, received 0.6 mm of rain and recorded a minimum temperature of minus 0.3 degrees Celsius.

Kupwara town received 1 mm of rain and recorded a low of 0.4 degrees Celsius, which is 3.5 degrees Celsius below normal.

Gulmarg ski resort in north Kashmir received 4 cm of snow and recorded a low of minus 6.4 degrees Celsius, which is 0.6 degrees Celsius below normal.

Jammu recorded a minimum temperature of 9.9 degrees Celsius, which is 1.7 degrees Celsius below normal.

Banihal recorded a low of 3.8 degrees Celsius, Batote 4.8 degrees Celsius, and Bhaderwah 3.4 degrees Celsius.

Regarding the forecast, the official said that on February 28 and 29, partly to generally cloudy weather is expected with the possibility of light rain and snow at isolated places.

From March 1 to 3, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain and snow in most places, with heavy rain and snow at a few middle and higher reaches during March 2 and 3.

“Few places may experience thunder, lightning, and hailstorms accompanied by gusty winds during the period,” the MeT official said.

While Chillai Kalan, the 40-day harsh period of winter ended on January 29 and the 20-day-long winter period Chillai Khurd ended on February 18, Kashmir is currently experiencing the 10-day-long Chillai Bachha period, which would culminate on February 28
