HED Proposes 49-Day Winter Break for Colleges from December 27 in J&K

The Jammu and Kashmir Higher Education Department (HED) has proposed a 49-day winter vacation for government degree colleges of the Kashmir division and winter zones of Jammu division, starting from December 27, 2025. The proposal was shared by the Director Colleges J&K, Prof Sheikh Ajaz Bashir.
Proposed Winter Vacation Schedule for Colleges
 
As per the academic planner of the Higher Education Department, the tentative winter break details are:
  • Vacation Start Date: 27 December 2025
  • Vacation End Date: 14 February 2026
  • Total Duration: 49 Days
  • Applicable To: Degree Colleges of Kashmir Division
  • Degree Colleges in Winter Zones of Jammu Division
⚠️ Note: The proposal is yet to receive approval from the competent authority.
Official Statement from Director Colleges J&K
Director Colleges, Prof Sheikh Ajaz Bashir, stated that the winter break proposal aligns with the academic calendar of the Higher Education Department. However, he clarified that final approval is still awaited, and the vacation has not been officially notified yet.
Background: SED Winter Vacations Already Announced
Earlier, on November 25, the School Education Department (SED) announced winter vacations in a phased manner for schools in Kashmir division and winter zones of Jammu division.
SED Winter Vacation Schedule
  • Pre-Primary (Balvatika): 26 November 2025 – 28 February 2026
  • Middle Classes (Up to Class 8): 01 December 2025 – 28 February 2026
  • Classes 9th to 12th: 11 December 2025 – 22 February 2026
SED also directed that all teaching staff must remain available during the vacation period for any academic or administrative work.
What Students and Colleges Should Know
  • The college winter break is currently a proposal, not a final order.
  • An official notification will be issued only after approval.
  • Students and staff should not rely on tentative dates until confirmation.
  • The proposal aims to maintain academic continuity during harsh winter conditions.
 
Students, parents, and college authorities are advised to regularly check the official Higher Education Department website or official PDF notifications for confirmation and updates regarding the winter vacation schedule.
