JK News Today: Supreme Court Gives Centre Six Weeks To Respond On J&K Statehood

The Supreme Court has granted the central government a period of six weeks to file its response regarding the demand for restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

The decision came during a hearing on Friday, where a bench led by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai heard submissions from both the petitioners and the Centre.

Acknowledging the sensitivity of the issue, the CJI noted that factors like the recent terror attack in Pahalgam must be considered when evaluating the timeline for restoring statehood to the Union Territory.

Appearing for the petitioners, senior advocate Gopal Sankarnarayanan argued that the revocation of J&K’s statehood occurred back in 2019, and despite the passage of several years—and even the conduct of elections—the status has not been reinstated. “A significant amount of time has passed, and we are now in 2025,” he pointed out.

In response, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta emphasized the complex ground realities, stating, “Not only water, but a great deal of blood has flowed since then.”

He added that elections were held peacefully and mentioned ongoing consultations between the Union and UT governments. He stressed that security concerns, including incidents like the one in Pahalgam, need to be factored into any decisions on statehood.

After considering all arguments, the bench granted the Union government six weeks to submit its detailed reply on the matter.
