Rain showers to lash J&K, flash floods likely in North Kashmir
The weatherman of Wednesday, said generally cloudy weather is expected today, with light to moderate rain showers likely in many areas.
“Though no significant rain is expected during the day, the weather activity is likely to pick up in the late evening and night, especially in North Kashmir,” said Independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng.
He said, the Kupwara district is very likely to continue with the rain, with spill over into parts of Central Kashmir at 40% probability. The South Kashmir is likely to receive rainfall of lesser intensity.
He added, on August 29, the weather system is likely to spread and thus may cover most parts of Jammu and Kashmir when it clouded their skies, bringing rain showers in the afternoon as well.
“Because of this expansion, there is likely to be a drop in the day temperatures. Accordingly, the Kashmir plains are thus likely to experience temperatures between 18 and 23°C,” said Faizan.
“While the Jammu region sees early morning cloud development that might penetrate into Kashmir on August 30, rains are likely over both the regions. However, the latest forecasts mentioned some uncertainty while stating the possibility of less intensity rain compared to the previous day. The temperatures could stand between 16-20°C in case the rain continues during the day, while the weather will improve likely during the end of the day,” he added.
Notably, this rainfall, which is expected from August 28 to 30, might affect different areas of J&K at different times and varying intensities. The maximum intensity of rainfall is likely over Kupwara and the higher reaches of North Kashmir, including the Gurez Valley. First snowfall of the season may occur over some higher elevations, mainly in North Kashmir, followed by South Kashmir.
Also, continuous showers have created the risk of flash floods and cloudbursts, especially in North Kashmir, Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, and Rajouri. Shooting stones and landslides are likely to occur along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which makes traveling risky.—(KB)
