U.S. Intensifies Action Against Maduro With Military Strikes Inside Venezuela

The United States has carried out military strikes within Venezuela, significantly escalating pressure on President Nicolás Maduro’s government, according to U.S. officials cited by CBS News. The action marks a sharp turn in Washington’s approach as President Donald Trump authorized attacks on multiple locations, including Venezuelan military installations, early Saturday.

These strikes come after months of heightened U.S. military activity in the Caribbean region. American forces have expanded their presence with the deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier and several other naval vessels positioned near Venezuela.

In recent weeks, U.S. forces have also intercepted two oil tankers linked to Venezuela and conducted lethal operations against more than 30 boats that U.S. authorities allege were involved in drug trafficking. President Trump previously stated that U.S. forces targeted port areas used to load vessels carrying narcotics.

The Trump administration has repeatedly accused President Maduro of involvement in drug trafficking networks and of cooperating with criminal groups designated by the U.S. as terrorist organizations—allegations that the Venezuelan government strongly denies. On Christmas Eve, President Trump avoided spelling out a specific end goal but warned that any further defiance by Maduro would have severe consequences.

Despite the rising tensions, President Maduro said earlier this week that his government remains willing to engage in dialogue with the United States on issues including drug trafficking, oil, and migration, stating that talks could take place at any time and location.
