Vaibhav Suryavanshi sets world record after carnage in Dubai
India’s 14-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashed yet another explosive century against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the U-19 Asia Cup encounter in Dubai on Friday. The southpaw took just 56 balls to reach his century in the tournament’s opening fixture. Suryavanshi smashed 171 off 95 balls, featuring 9 fours and 14 sixes, before getting out against Uddish Suri.
The knock also saw Suryavanshi set a new world record for hitting the most sixes in a single innings in a Youth ODI. The previous record was held by Australia’s Michael Hill, who had smashed 12 sixes against Namibia U19 in 2008. He also became the first player in the history of the sport to smash over 50 sixes in Youth ODIs.
He began his innings cautiously before hitting a boundary against Ali Asgar on the sixth delivery. In his subsequent over, the southpaw took on the left-arm seamer once more, hitting him for two sixes.
Suryavanshi reached his half-century off 30 balls with a six against Ahmed Khudadad, setting himself up for yet another noteworthy knock. He even received a reprieve when he was dropped at long off on 85 while attempting to clear Suri.
This was his second century in Youth ODIs with the previous being 143 against England in July this year.
Meanwhile, riding on his effort along with 69-run knock each by Aaron George and Vihaan Malhotra and strong cameos by batters lower down the order helped India pile a massive 433/6 in 50 overs.
Suryavanshi had become the youngest cricketer in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy history to score a century earlier this month, achieving the feat during the group-stage match against Maharashtra.
Suryavanshi, who made his Ranji Trophy debut at the age of 12, rose to fame following a brilliant show in the IPL with the Rajasthan Royals, which was also his debut season in the cash-rich tournament. He amassed 252 runs at a strike-rate of 206.55, including the second-fastest century in IPL history (101 off 38 balls) against Gujarat Titans, making him the tournament’s youngest centurion
