Zojila gets fresh snowfall freezes at -16
Fresh snowfall on the Zojila pass has brought welcome respite from the intense cold wave conditions across the Kashmir Valley with Srinagar witnessing an improvement in night-time temperatures.
Srinagar has recorded sub-zero temperatures for the second consecutive week, while the cold wave conditions have persisted across the entire Jammu and Kashmir since November 6. According to the MeT office in Srinagar, the summer capital recorded minus 1.9 degrees on Sunday night. The prevailing conditions are likely to persist until December 5. However, a brief spell of rain and snowfall is likely to occur across the valley from December 6, it said.
Meanwhile, fresh snowfall was recorded on the Zojila pass, which recorded the region’s lowest night temperature at minus 16 degrees on Sunday. Jammu remained the warmest place at 9.8 degrees. Nearly every weather station in Kashmir has recorded sub-zero temperatures, a spell that officials believe will continue until December 6.
While daytime temperatures have remained relatively moderate across Jammu and Kashmir, night time temperatures have plummeted several degrees below freezing point across most weather stations in the Valley.
According to MeT officials, summer capital Srinagar recorded a minimum of minus 1.9 degrees Celsius on Sunday. In central Kashmir, temperatures improved by some degrees in Budgam and Ganderbal, along with South Kashmir’s Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam and Anantnag, which also witnessed some improvement in the minimum temperatures, which however remained below the freezing point.
Qazigund, known as the gateway to Kashmir, also recorded minus 1 degree, while several other weather stations across north Kashmir, including Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara, recorded a slight improvement in night temperatures.
In the Jammu division, the temperatures remained relatively moderate with Jammu city recording 9.6 degrees Celsius, while Banihal, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah and Batote also experienced slightly milder weather conditions.
