Independence Day Celebrations

• India celebrated its 79th Independence Day today, marking nearly eight decades of freedom from British rule.

• The celebrations began with PM Narendra Modi paying floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, followed by hoisting the Tricolour at the Red Fort and delivering his 12th consecutive Independence Day address—the longest streak by any PM.

• This year’s tricolour adornments and cultural fervor were celebrated nationwide, with even Google joining in with a special doodle highlighting achievements in cricket, chess, cinema, and space.

PM Modi’s Key Announcements

• Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PM-VBRY): Launched to boost formal employment—first-time private-sector job holders will receive ₹15,000.

• Next Generation GST Reforms: Announced to be rolled out by Diwali, aiming to reduce tax burden on everyday essentials

• Mission Sudarshan Chakra: Introduced as a powerful defense initiative to counter and pre-empt enemy threats.

• High-Power Demography Mission: Aimed at addressing demographic concerns, particularly illegal infiltration impacting youth and national security.

• A cloudburst-triggered flash flood swept through Chositi village in Kishtwar, Jammu & Kashmir on 14 August—resulting in over 60 fatalities, 100+ injuries, and more than 250 missing persons, including pilgrims on the Machail Mata Yatra.
