9.8 km tunnel on Banihal-Katra rail link completed

Jammu: 9.8 km tunnel that connects two stations of the Banihal-Katra 111 kilometers railway line under construction in Jammu and Kashmir is now complete according to officials.

It is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Line (USBRL) project. It will be the 3rd tunnel that follows that of the 12.6 kilometers tunnel, T-49B which is the longest tunnel in Indian Railways, which was completed in January of this year.

The breakthrough was achieved by launching a blast. as a result, construction of T-13, the tunnel for escape T-13 was initiated, as stated by the officials involved in the construction.

“We have succeeded in completing the construction work on the tunnel between Dugga and Sawlakote stations in the Katra-Banihal section of the Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL),” an official said on Monday.

The officials stated that USBRL is a project of the national level and Indian railways are determined to its time-bound completion.

“We completed the 9.8-km-long tunnel today which connects two railway stations located on each side,” the official added.

It is the Dugga railway station, which is located at its Jammu end is now connected to Basindadar (Sawalkote) train station to the Srinagar end through the completeness of this tunnel, officials stated.

“Two out of seven railway stations located in Katra-Banihal section of this railway project have been connected through this tunnel,” they added and added that construction of the tunnel started in 2018.

Of the 272-kilometer USBRL project, work was completed on 161 kilometers. completed in stages. The initial phase of the 118-km Qazigund-Baramulla was completed in October 2009, and was followed by the 18-km Banihal-Qazigund phase in June 2013, and then the 25-km Udhampur Katra in July 2014.
