Unemployment rate falls in J&K urban areas in one year: Report

The
unemployment rate in urban
areas of Jammu and Kashmir
fell by 2.3% in the last year,
according to the quarterly
report of the Periodic Labour
Force Survey (PLFS) for July-
September 2023 quarter.
Released by the Ministry of
Statistic and Programme
Implementation (MoSPI) on
November 29, 2023, the report
also noted a 2% increase in the
Worker Population Ratio
(WPR), indicating more
employment in the Union
Territory’s urban areas within
one year.
The Labour Force
Participation Rate (LFPR)
exhibited an upward trend,
increasing by 1.3%, suggesting a
rise in the percentage of people
in the labour force in the UT.
The National Sample Survey
Office (NSSO) initiated the
PLFS in April 2017, producing
quarterly bulletins corresponding
to different survey quarters,
providing estimates of labour
force indicators for urban areas.
Since October-December 2018,
20 bulletins have been released
by MoSPI.
As far as Unemployment
Rate (UR), defined as the percentage
of unemployed persons
among those in the labour force,
in urban areas of the UT, is concerned,
it decreased from 13%
(July-September 2022 quarter)
to 10.7% (July-September
2023), marking a 2.3% reduction.
Intermediate rates were
13.5% (October-December
2022), 12.4% (January-March
2023), and 10.9% (April-June
2023).
The Worker Population
Ratio (WPR), representing the
percentage of employed persons
in the population, rose
from 33.4% (July-September
2022) to 35.4% (July-
September 2023), a 2%
increase. Rates for other quarters
were 32.7% (October-
December 2022), 33%
(January-March 2023), and
33.9% (April-June 2023).
The Labour Force
Participation Rate (LFPR) for
UT’s urban areas increased from 38.4% (July-September 2022) to
39.7% (July-September 2023),
an annual increase of 1.3%.
Other rates were 37.8%
(October-December 2022),
37.6% (January-March 2023),
and 38.1% (April-June 2023).
The PLFS report highlighted
a decrease in the unemployment
rate for both male and female
populations, with WPR and
LFPR showing significant
increases for both genders.
For males, the
Unemployment Rate decreased
from 7.9% to 5.8% in one year,
while for females, it dropped
from 29.4% to 24.6%.
The Worker Population
Ratio for males increased from
51.6% to 53.1%, and for
females, it rose from 13.5% to
16.3% between July-
September 2022 and July-
September 2023.
Labour Force Population
Rate for males increased from
56% to 56.3%, and for females,
it rose from 19.2% to 21.6% in
the same period.
