Dispute Erupts Across the Country Over SC’s Order on Stray Dogs; Rahul Gandhi Calls the Decision ‘Cruel and Shortsighted’
Stray Dogs: Yesterday, the Supreme Court of India issued a major order regarding stray dogs. The court stated that in Delhi-NCR, stray dogs should be removed from the streets and placed in shelters. Following this order, protests have been seen on social media and in several parts of the country. Now, opposition leader and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has reacted to it, calling the decision “cruel and shortsighted.” After his statement, different opinions have emerged among political leaders on this issue.
‘Voiceless souls are not the problem’
Rahul Gandhi shared his views on this matter in a post on X. He wrote, “The SC’s directive to remove all stray dogs from Delhi-NCR is a step back from decades of humane, science-based policy. These voiceless souls are not a ‘problem’ to be eliminated. Through shelters, sterilisation, vaccination, and community care, streets can be kept safe without cruelty.” He further said that such decisions are “cruel, shortsighted, and erode the kindness within us.”
Opposition leaders’ differing views
Other opposition leaders have also expressed their opinions on the Supreme Court’s order. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram welcomed the order, saying, “I hope this is the beginning of serious and concrete action.” On the other hand, TMC MP Saket Gokhale called the order “arbitrary” and said it was passed “without any large-scale consultation process.” He wrote on X, “The issue of managing stray dogs and ensuring people’s safety is certainly a matter of concern. However, this is not something that can be resolved by arbitrary judicial orders. Cruelty towards defenseless animals cannot be a solution.”
What was the Supreme Court’s order?
During the hearing of a suo motu case, the Supreme Court ordered that officials in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad must remove stray dogs from the streets and transfer them to shelters within eight weeks. The court also warned that strict action would be taken against any organisation attempting to obstruct this drive.
