Bashar al-Assad Sentenced to Death by Syrian Court for Crimes Against Humanity
A criminal court in Damascus has sentenced former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia over crimes committed during the country’s prolonged civil war.
The verdict, delivered on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, marks a major development in Syria’s efforts to hold senior figures of the former regime accountable for alleged atrocities committed during Assad’s rule.
Bashar al-Assad Gets Death Sentence
The Damascus criminal court found Bashar al-Assad guilty of serious crimes connected with the suppression of opposition and violence during the Syrian conflict. The charges included premeditated murder, torture, arbitrary detention and crimes against humanity.
The court proceedings were conducted in Assad’s absence. He left Syria after his government was overthrown in December 2024 and subsequently went to Moscow, where he has remained.
Atef Najib Also Sentenced to Death
Former Syrian security official Atef Najib was also handed a death sentence.
Najib previously headed the Political Security Branch in Deraa province and was among the senior officials accused of involvement in the violent suppression of protests that erupted in 2011.
His case was heard before the Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus. The court had completed the hearings earlier this month and scheduled August 11 for the verdict.
Allegations Linked to Syria’s Civil War
The convictions are connected to abuses committed during the conflict that began after anti-government protests broke out in Syria in 2011.
The crackdown on protesters developed into a devastating civil war involving the Syrian government, opposition groups and various foreign-backed forces. The conflict resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions of people.
Assad’s Rule Comes to an End
Bashar al-Assad became president of Syria in 2000 following the death of his father, Hafez al-Assad. He remained in power for more than two decades.
His government eventually collapsed during a rebel offensive in December 2024. Assad left Damascus and fled to Russia as opposition forces took control of the capital, bringing his family’s decades-long rule to an end.
Major Development in Post-Assad Syria
The death sentence represents one of the most significant judicial actions taken against senior members of the former Syrian government since the fall of Assad.
The proceedings are being closely watched as Syria attempts to establish accountability for alleged killings, torture and other abuses committed during the years of conflict.
