Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced a nationwide free online coaching initiative for young people preparing for various competitive examinations, saying the growing dependence on coaching centres has become a significant financial burden for poor and middle-class families.

Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the historic Red Fort on India’s 80th Independence Day, Modi said the government would bring together the country’s digital public infrastructure and its pool of talented teachers and educators to create a network offering free coaching to aspirants.

“The competition surrounding coaching classes has become a huge burden for middle-class families. Every parent feels that if they do not send their child to a coaching centre, they are somehow falling behind or do not belong to a respectable family,” Modi said.

He said the initiative was being planned with the financial pressures faced by poorer and middle-class households in mind, particularly the substantial amounts families spend on coaching. “Keeping the concerns of poor and middle-class families in mind, we want to help save them the thousands of crores of rupees they spend on coaching,” the prime minister said.
