Schools to remain open until weather permits J&K Govt

Divisional Commissioner Kashmir PK Pole on Monday stated that schools will be open as they can as long as the weather permits it and the classes will be carried out as long as there isn’t major snowfall in the plains of the Valley.

“There is no need for clarity. Each year when there is a massive snowfall on plains, including within the cities, schools are closed for vacations,” the news agency GNS reported Pole as saying.

“It is dependent on the weather and could mean that school will continue to be in session beyond the 15th of December. There’s already a clear statement by the Director of School Education Kashmir and each year, not only this time, schools will be open until significant snowfall. It’s all dependent on the weather,” he said while interviewing reporters at the sidelines of a celebration in the city.

On Monday, authorities cancelled classes for students attending schools across four districts in Jammu and Kashmir due to the weather.

“As per the directions of Deputy Commissioner Poonch, there was no class work in zone Mandi and Baffliaz of the district (holiday for students only) today due to inclement weather conditions,” Chief Education Officer Poonch, B Dass said.

The reports said that elementary and middle schools were shut today because of the bad weather conditions in Doda as well as Kishtwar districts, as also in Kashmir’s north Kupwara district.

“Due to an inclement climate, classes until the Middle (8th) level will remain suspended today in both the Government and private schools in Doda. 9th grade onwards will continue to operate like normal,” reads a tweet from the official Twitter handle of the Deputy Commissioner Doda.

Also, given the extreme weather conditions, all schools that are up to middle standard were instructed to “observe no schooling” in Kishtwar. “High schools and Higher Secondary schools function normally,” Kishtwar administration stated in an announcement on Twitter.

As a result of new snowfalls on the higher reaches and the possibility of inclement weather as well, Kupwara District Administration decided to suspend classes for all schools, up to class 10 on Monday.
