Surveillance by drones only in public areas permitted, privacy being ensured: Srinagar Police

Aerial surveillance is going on in suspected localities of Srinagar looking for anti-socials, Criminals, terrorists, OGWs etc using modern drones with high resolution cameras, these may not be visible from ground but be assured that life, property of citizens will be safeguarded.

Police on Monday clarified that its surveillance drones keep “vigilant watch” in “public areas” only in order to ensure privacy.

The police also denied criticism over the circulating of pictures of students through it, saying that the police were aware of their “responsibility” and that they weren’t “identifiable” as their faces were concealed.

“Our Aerial Surveillance teams are constantly on guard for absconders, criminals etc with high-definition cameras. The video (showing in the tweet) comes from an area that is public in the downtown area,” police said in a tweet. “The surveillance is in public areas only, so as to ensure privacy.”

Concerning the circulated image in which a group of students are seen swarming through the streets in Qamarwari during school hours Police sought to respond to two issues raised by a few internet users.

“Moral Policing: Most criminals are drug addicts, most drug addicts start in school bunking phase,” the police stated in a different tweet.

Concerning the issue of identity, the police said that “no student can be identified because they’ve hidden their faces, names. We are fully aware of our obligations.”

In the past, police said these students were seen roaming the streets of Qamarwari the area in the time of school. “Parents are asked to monitor school-going children. In addition, the school administration can also inform parents in the event that a student is absent without permission or notice”

Students have been seen walking around parks and roads, and even on school buses recently.
