Amit Shah rebuts allegations of constitutional overhaul
Home Minister Amit Shah asserted today that the Bharatiya Janata Party and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government remain steadfast in their commitment to upholding the Constitution, dismissing claims from the Opposition as fear-mongering tactics aimed at misleading voters.
Addressing reporters at a press conference in New Delhi, Shah rebutted the Congress party’s allegations of a hypothetical constitutional overhaul should the BJP secure a parliamentary supermajority.
He clarified that despite his confidence in the BJP’s electoral prospects, with indications from the preceding two phases suggesting a significant victory, any such victory would not translate into constitutional amendments.
He underscored that the BJP’s previous majorities in 2014 and 2019 were utilized responsibly, focusing on critical issues such as Article 370, the eradication of outdated British-era laws, the abolition of Triple Talaq, and combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shah accused the Congress of propagating falsehoods to sow discord and incite unrest, particularly regarding reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC). He criticized the circulation of manipulated videos, including edited videos featuring himself, as desperate attempts by the opposition to tarnish the electoral atmosphere.
Referring to the BJP’s actions in Karnataka, Telangana regarding certain quotas, Shah reiterated the party’s commitment to reservation policies and emphasized that the government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, would safeguard them.
In response to mounting allegations of sexual misconduct against Prajwal Revanna, a sitting MP from Hassan, of Janta Dal (S) Shah vehemently condemned such behaviour and assured swift action. Shah affirmed the BJP’s unwavering support for women’s issues and pledged zero tolerance for instances of sexual harassment under Modi’s leadership.
However, he criticized the Congress-led Karnataka government for its purported inaction, demanding accountability, and thorough investigations into the matter. He urged Priyanka Gandhi to hold her own party’s government accountable on pertinent issues and assured cooperation from the Home Ministry if sought.
Directing his criticism of Rahul Gandhi, Shah deplored the perceived decline in political discourse since Gandhi assumed leadership of the party.
Shah reiterated the BJP’s commitment to constitutional integrity, social justice through reservation policies, and women’s empowerment, while condemning political mudslinging and advocating for ethical governance and the use of deep fake edit videos appealing to the media that let facts reach the public after showing original video of his lecture and manipulated edited video that was in circulation on the social media supported by the opposition.
