ECI Election Results 2026 Live: Counting of votes for Bagalkot, Davanagere South bypolls underway amid tight security

Counting of votes for by-elections in two Assembly constituencies of Karnataka-Bagalkot Assembly constituency and Davanagere South Assembly constituency-began on Monday under tight security, election officials said. Polling for both seats was held on April 9. The bypolls were necessitated following the deaths of senior Indian National Congress MLAs H. Y. Meti from Bagalkot and Shamanur Shivashankarappa from Davanagere South. While the outcome is unlikely to alter the immediate political equations in the state, the contest is being closely watched as a prestige battle between the ruling Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party.

The Congress is aiming to retain both constituencies, while the BJP is looking to wrest the seats and politically corner the ruling party at a time when discussions around leadership changes and a possible cabinet reshuffle remain in focus in the state.

According to the Election Commission of India, voter turnout stood at 68.74 per cent in Bagalkot and 68.43 per cent in Davanagere South.

Election officials said clearer trends are expected by midday. Counting is being held at the University of Horticultural Sciences in Bagalkot and DRR School in Davanagere, with extensive security arrangements in place to ensure a smooth process.
